This course of three modules of 16 hours (48 hours total) will be a very deep dive into ‘historical synthesis.’ Students will learn the fundamentals of sound design and synthesis and learn how to program most of the historical synthesizers included in the Arturia V Collection 8 with the goal of getting to know classic synths deeply, and improving their skills as producers and sound designers. The final project of each module will be an original composition with all elements designed from scratch.
Module 1: SYNTHESIS CONCEPTS AND LEARNING HOW TO PROGRAM THE CLASSICS (8 Classes of 2 hours): In this module, we will begin with the history of synthesis and focus on additive and then subtractive synthesis up to the year 1977. We will review the basic principles of sound and the important parts of an analog synth: Oscillators, Filters, Amplifiers and LFOs.
Synths (within the Arturia V Collection 8) that we will program in Module 1:
- The Hammond B3 (Arturia B-3 V)
- The Moog Modular (Arturia Modular V)
- The MiniMoog (Arturia Mini V)
- The Arp 2600 (Arturia ARP2600 V)
- The Buchla Easel (Arturia Buchla V)
Module 2: THE CLASSIC POLYPHONIC ANALOG SYNTHS AND AN INTRO TO FM SYNTHESIS (8 Classes of 2 hours): In this module we will work with the famous polyphonic analog synths that have been used on so many pop hits from the past and present. We will finish the module by learning about FM (Frequency Modulation) synthesis and the Yamaha DX7.
Synths (Within the Arturia V Collection 8) that we will program in Module 2:
- The Sequential Circuits Prophet 5 (Arturia Prophet V)
- The Yamaha CS80 (Arturia CS-80 V)
- The Oberheim OB-Xa (Arturia OB-Xa V)
- The Roland Jupiter 8 (Arturia Jup-8 V)
- The Roland Juno 106 (Arturia Jun-6 V)
- The Yamaha DX7 (Arturia DX7 V)
Module 3: SAMPLERS, VOCODERS AND WAVETABLE SYNTHESIS (8 Classes of 2 hours): In this module we will work with sampling and the original samplers that launched the sampling revolution. We will finish the course with Arturia’s powerful vocoder instrument and Vital Audio’s wavetable synth – Vital, which is currently being used widely in the music industry.
- The Mellotron (Arturia Mellotron V)
- The Synclavier (Arturia Synclavier V)
- The Fairlight CMI (Arturia CMI V)
- The Emulator II (Arturia Emulator II V)
- The Vocoder (Arturia Vocoder V)
- Vital (Vital Audio)
