Description

Brooklyn Digital Conservatory

The Brooklyn Digital Conservatory offers limited private online and in-person training in Advanced Sound Design with Ableton Live 12  with producer, music technologist and Ableton Certified Trainer Dan Freeman.

These sessions are for producers who know Ableton Live pretty well and want to get into the realm of designing their own sounds rather than using presets or sample packs.

Topics that I will cover in these sessions:

  1. Basic concepts of Sound Design and Synthesis: Frequencies, Oscillators, Amplifiers, Filters and Modulators
  2. Analog: (subtractive synthesis) – How to Sound Design With Ableton’s Analog and Drift instruments.  Particularly focused on building basses, leads and pads. Will also demonstrate sound design with a hardware Moog Subsequent 37 and Juno 106 instrument
  3. FM: (frequency modulation synthesis) – How to sound design with Ableton’s Operator and Meld instruments. Particularly focused on building Drum Sounds and Basses. Will also demonstrate sound design with a hardware Yamaha DX7 instrument .
  4. Sample-Based Synthesis: Will use Ableton’s Sampler and Simpler instruments to demonstrate the powerful techniques of microsampling.  We will record our own samples using the isolation booth and microphones at New York City Studios. Will also introduce concepts of Generative Synthesis.
  5. Wavetable Synthesis: Using Ableton’s powerful Wavetable instrument to create massive basses, leads and pads.  Will also use the softsynth Vital.
  6. Physical Modelling Synthesis: Using Live’s powerful physical modelling instruments Collision, Electric and Tension to create deep textures.
  7. Granular Synthesis: Techniques to create sound using Ableton’s Granulator II instrument.
  8. Better Sounding Drums: I teach how to synthesize your own drum sounds and samples rather than relying on sample packs and presents to get a more original sound.
  9. Creative Uses of AI in Production and Sound Design:  I will discuss how generative AI works and some creative ways of using it.

Students Will Learn: A much better understanding of how synths work, how sound works and will be able to create their own sound design which will give them a much more distinctive voice as producers.

All sessions will take place Dan’s production room in New York City Studios near Union Square, Manhattan. These studios are equipped with full speaker systems, isolation booths, microphones and hardware synths including a: Juno 106, Sequential Prophet Rev2Moog Subsequent 37, Oberheim OB-X8
